APP WATCH: Navfree for Android

If free navigation on Google Navigation just wasn't cutting it, you can now get free sat nav on your Android smartphone via Navmii's freebie app, Navfree.

This GPS app is free to download and offers turn-by-turn voice directions on OpenStreetMap, a map that its 3.7 million users can update for a crowdsourced map that becomes increasingly more accurate.

Like Nokia's free sat nav offering, Nokia Maps, you can store map data on the phone to navigate without a data connection – or expensive roaming charges when using sat nav abroad.

Navmii marketing director Dominic Preston said: 'Navfree is exactly the same as a GPS navigation system for a car, apart from three things: it's an app available on your smartphone. You can take it anywhere your phone goes; users can update local mapping to make it more accurate so everyone using it benefits; and its completely free to download, use and update.'

Navfree was originally a free app for the iPhone and is now available on the Android Market for Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand, India, South Africa and Latin America.
