LG Optimus phones get Android 2.3 update

We've spent the last couple of weeks looking at the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update and pondering how long it will take to come to Android smartphones. But some phone owners are still waiting for updates to an earlier generation of the operating system, including owners of the Optimus Series of smartphones. Thankfully, we do come with good news on that front.

LG has taken to Facebook to 'express its sincere thanks' to owners of the LG Optimus 2X, LG Optimus 3D and LG Optimus Black for 'waiting patiently' for the upgrade to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). Your patience is about to be rewarded.

LG has come forward with an update schedule for the much-delayed rollout. The LG Optimus 2X is available now for open models in Europe, while the LG Optimus 3D starts from 21 November (open models), with the LG Optimus Black following a week after (28 November). So what if you haven't got a SIM-free version in your pocket?

Well, it looks like a longer wait. LG says the 'exact timing of the upgrades in each market may vary because of the different requirements in each country with respect to domestic operators and models'. In short, that means your network will want to test it before it rolls out the update. Which really could take any amount of time. Perhaps give them a call if you hear nothing by the end of November.

As for future upgrades, those could come in a little quicker. LG adds it will do its 'utmost to continually provide better service in the future'. Let's hope that means Ice Cream Sandwich in the first half of next year, phone hardware permitting.
