Apple unleashes iTunes 10.5

Yes, this is a computer-based upgrade, which isn't something we would usually bother with. But if you want the iOS 5 upgrade, you'll need to upgrade to iTunes 10.5 now. It's that important.

Yes, the iOS 5 upgrade. That's scheduled for later today, when we should hopefully be able to access all that lovely new Apple content, headed up by the likes of the Notification Center, iMessage and Newsstand, but totalling a whopping 200+ new features. More on all of that here. We don't even want to think about how big that download will be. But before you consider doing that, you'll need to grab iTunes 10.5 for your PC or Mac.

Get the iTunes update and you'll be able to take advantage of wireless synching for your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. Yes, no more rummaging around for the cable when you need to update. As long as you're in a Wi-Fi zone, it should be as easy as a click of a button. You'll also need the feature to get the new OS update on your mobile.

iTunes in the Cloud (or iCloud) is also a possibility with the new update. However, it's not the full version for us UK owners. Rights issues mean we don't have access to the iTunes Match music service. However, we can store apps and books in the cloud after today, which is something, as well as being very convenient for multi-device users.

Security updates complete the suite, which is available now for free. As for iOS 5, we expect it will be available when America wakes, so plenty of time to update your iTunes yet.
