Acer Liquid Mini upgraded

Good news if you like colourful smartphones – the Acer Liquid Mini has had an upgrade and now features a choice of cherry, lagoon, pearl and steel for the outer case. Essentially the ones you can see in the picture.

It's not just a lick of paint though, with the Liquid Mini now offering Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) for the operating system and a new Acer 4.2 interface, which is said to be your 'ticket for speed of execution and total ease of use'. That means widgets you can place on the home screen for easy access, more space for those widgets, easy switching between apps and an enhanced virtual keyboard, thanks to the relocation of the status bar.

There's also a 3.2-inch multi-touch display, a five-megapixel camera for video and stills, easy image sharing to Facebook and Flickr, the SocialJogger 2.0 app (which essentially keeps all your favourite networks in a single feed) and, of course, access to the Android Market.

Downside? Well, in our review of the last model, we pointed out the poor performance of the 600MHz processor. That still seems to be there, so despite the whizzy interface, this is unlikely to be the fastest phone out there.

On the plus side, it's unlikely to be the most expensive either. We should find out just how much in the next few weeks.
