Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini and Mini Pro launch
06 May 2011
One loves HD recording, the other promises super-fast messaging
One actually leaked at the start of last month, but now Sony Ericsson has official unveiled two next-generation Xperia Minis, the Xperia Mini and Xperia Mini Pro. I think you've guessed where each one is aimed. Or at least, where the latter is aimed.
Making history of the existing model, both smartphones are now powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and run Android Gingerbread 2.3 from launch. Already, we're interested. There's also a three-inch scratch-resistant, multi-touch glass screen with Reality Display, courtesy of the Mobile Bravia engine, and of course, there's access to over 150,000 apps on the Android Market. The enhanced interface now allows up to 16 of those apps to be displayed on the home screen at anytime too. Design isn't a great leap forward to be honest, it's all about what's under the bonnet really.
If you opt for the Pro, you get a handset geared towards messaging, with an optimised slide-out keyboard to help in that respect, as well as Type & Send functionality, which eliminates the need to open a dedicated app for each type of message and Smart Keyboard, which triggers predictive messaging actions automatically when you slide out that keyboard. The Pro also comes preloaded with Office Suite and McAfee antivirus software, which will probably impress your boss. What about the standard Mini? Well, that's the world's smallest Android phone with HD video recording and like the Pro, also packs a fully-featured five-megapixel stills camera, good enough to compete with a low-end compact camera, that's for sure.
Steve Walker, head of marketing at Sony Ericsson said: 'We wanted to provide consumers even greater choice across the Xperia range, while building on the success of the original mini series. These turbo-charged smartphones now contain even more power, enhanced functionality, a larger screen and premium features unique to Sony Ericsson. They are packed full of features, making them a perfect choice for consumers looking for all the benefits of Android and Sony in a beautiful and easy to use compact form factor.'
Both the Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini Pro and Xperia Mini will be available globally in from the third quarter of 2011. That's autumn to you and I.
