This post contains good news and some bad news. The good news, quite obviously, is the arrival of Android 2.3 Gingerbread for both the HTC Desire HD and the HTC Incredible S.The arrival of the upgraded operating system was confirmed on the HTC support site, with owners set to see a notification of the Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) update when it is ready to go for their phones. If you see it, make sure you are in a Wi-Fi area (ideally) and follow the instructions given, including the instructions to back up your phone. You'll know all is done by checking the build number. It should show as 2.36.405.5 for the Desire HD and 2.12.405.7 for the Incredible S if everything has gone as it should. It will be a welcome upgrade for the Desire HD, a phone we raved about late last year. For the Incredible S, it's an update to an operating system that perhaps should have been there at launch. We found it a decent phone in review, but Android 2.3 will certainly make it a more appealing prospect. So what is this bad news we speak of? Well, all of this update action initially applies to unlocked phones. The networks will want to go over the updates themselves before allowing it to go out to customers. That can take weeks, sometimes months. When we hear the networks' plans for rolling out, we'll let you know.
