You might well have expected Facebook to be pitching a tablet app for the iPad. Or possibly something for the latest generation of Android tablets. But the BlackBerry PlayBook has actually got its nose in front, offering a Facebook tablet app this month. Indeed, it's already said to be available in its native Canada.According to Engadget, the Facebook app is one of two big announcements/additions for the PlayBook tablet, the other being a video chat application, which is available from today as an over-the-air update for current owners. Expect both voice and video calling over Wi-Fi, just like other similar apps for similar devices in fact. The Facebook app was expected later, but it seems to have launched in Canada almost as soon as the announcement was made. Not that it affects us Brits, as we've yet to see the PlayBook on our shelves. But when it does come, it now offers a little bit more for our money – a lack of apps was one of the main criticisms when it launched in North America.Facebook for PlayBook will let you view and add your friends, share photos and videos 'seamlessly', access Facebook Chat and view and interact with the news feed. Everything you would expect of Facebook on the go, but tailored to the larger tablet screen.'There are over 30 million users of our Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones app who are staying in touch with their social network while on the go,' said Tom Goguen, VP, Collaboration and Social Networking at Research In Motion, 'Now with Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook we can also offer customers highly engaging social experiences optimized for the PlayBook including the ability to share FaceBook pictures and videos with friends and family on an HDTV.'The app is free, of course. Here's hoping it's the first of a glut of new apps before the UK launch.
