BlackBerry Bold Touch gets official launch

It's been rumoured for some time, but now the BlackBerry Bold Touch has made its official debut.

Going by the official name of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 or 9930 (depending on your location), it will be the first to feature the all-new BlackBerry OS 7. More on that later. But RIM has high hopes for it: 'The new BlackBerry Bold smartphones and BlackBerry 7 OS are inspired by millions of customers around the world who want the ultimate combination of performance, functionality and style,' said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO of Research In Motion. 'These fully-loaded and beautifully crafted smartphones offer a highly refined user experience with blazingly fast performance, a brilliant touch-screen and an outstanding typing experience.'

Offering up a premium finish, with a brushed stainless steel frame and a high gloss glass-weave backplate, the Bold Touch is also the thinnest BlackBerry yet, at only 10.5mm. It's not all about the looks though, there's also a 1.2GHz processor and Liquid Graphics touch-screen for 'fast, smooth performance', 60fps performance with instant UI action/response and 287 dpi for super-crisp visuals.

Other features of note include built-in support for NFC (Near Field Communications), a five-megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording, GPS, Wi-Fi, high-speed 3G, Bluetooth 2.1, 8GB on-board memory, a microSD card slot to boost up to 32GB and as we mentioned at the start, BlackBerry OS 7.

BlackBerry OS 7 will apparently offer improved browsing, voice-activated universal handset search plus support for HTML5 and JavaScript support when browsing the web. There's also a new feature called BlackBerry Balance, which allows you to spilt business and personal email accounts, should you like to separate your life like that. New icons and improved looks too, as you might expect.

Sadly, due to hardware constraints, the new OS isn't coming to older handsets. Not even the (fairly) recently-launched BlackBerry Torch, which is sure to cause a few grumbles from owners of said device.

As for the BlackBerry Bold Touch, there's no shelf date for it as yet. Just later this year. But probably over summer, at a guess.
