Altec Lansing Octiv 650 turns iPhone into media center

If you download a lot of movies but are sick of watching it all in front of your computer, the latest iPhone dock from Altec Lansing is an easy, cheap way to pop it all on your TV screen.

The new Octiv 650 has a video jack that lets you connect it to a TV so that TV and movies stored on your iPhone or iPod touch can be viewed on that comfy flatscreen. Audio is played through the speaker dock itself, while the device charges the entire time so you won't be running out of the juice right at the cliffhanger moment.

The unique triangular shape means you can discreetly slip it in a corner, while the built-in four-inch downfiring subwoofer produces some impressive low notes.

As expected from a manufacturer with a serious pedigree in iPhone dock systems, call functions are a highlight with in-call support automatically pausing the audio-visual action when you receive a phone call. It also comes with a remote control as well as a separate 3.5mm audio jack to plug in another music player or phone.

There's also a free iOS app, Music Mood, that allows you to play ambient screensavers on the TV screen when you simply want to play music.

A great – and low cost – alternative to using a media-center PC or PS3 to play digital media on a traditional TV, the Altec Lansing Octv 650 is available for £169.99 from Apple, John Lewis, Dixons and PC World. The Music Mood app is available free on the App Store.
