White iPhone 4 landing in spring

Technology's longest-running release date saga is almost at an end, with news that the white iPhone 4 will be released by Apple in the spring. Which is, more or less, around now.

According to the Wall Street Journal, after a 10-month delay, the white iPhone 4 will finally be available to customers. The publication says it with some authority, although Apple itself is declining comment officially right now, despite Apple VP Phil Schiller all but confirming on Twitter last month.

What we don't know is whether the white iPhone is coming to the UK and if so, will it be sold just directly from Apple or will one of the networks bag an 'exclusive' on it. In truth, it's likely to be available on all networks if it's available here at all and could be the perfect marketing tool for Apple this summer.

Why? Well, rumours suggest that the next-generation iPhone 5 will be delayed, with Apple's June press event almost certain to focus on software and the new operating system (iOS 5). With no new phone to sell over summer, a white variant might be just the thing to pull in the punters. Then again, would you really want to commit to what's effectively the outgoing iPhone when a new one, likely to also be offered in white, is landing before the year is out?

Decisions, decisions...
