Sony Ericsson Xperia Play available in the UK

Depending on your choice of network, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play has launched today. Some networks (notably O2) have delayed the launch, but if you hunt around, you'll find it somewhere. Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy are both claiming to have stock today, for example. Anyway, once you get one, you'll probably want to be filling the world’s first PlayStation Certified smartphone with games. Just as well there are plenty to choose from.

According to Sony Ericsson's initial list, content certainly isn't an issue, with more than 60 games from the industry’s biggest content providers including Sony Computer Entertainment, Gameloft, Electronic Arts and Glu Mobile, a mix of original PlayStation titles, well known 3D titles that take the full advantage of the graphical capabilities and controls of Play plus popular 'casual games' all optimised for handset's game pad.

There are some big hitters available from today, including Assassins Creed Altair’s Chronicles HD, Need for Speed, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, Gun Bros, Galaxy on Fire 2, Guns ‘n’ Glory, Worms and Zenonia 2. Some exclusives too, including Dungeon Defenders Second Wave, first-person shooter N.O.V.A.2 and from April 14th, 3rd person pirate adventure Back Stab. To get you going, there's even a freebie - top racing game Asphalt 6 will be available for free exclusively on the Xperia Play.

There is also a range of PlayStation original games available at launch, including a pre-install of the PS One classic Crash Bandicoot and a further 5 PlayStation original games available to download via the PlayStation Pocket application. The other titles mentioned are downloadable via the Xperia Play launcher, an application that's activated by simply sliding open the gamepad.

Of course, the phone itself is no slouch outside of gaming, An Android smartphone, it will run Android Gingerbread 2.3, with an optimised Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with a 1Ghz CPU within, along with an embedded Adreno GPU graphics processor for 'silky smooth' playback and minimal power consumption. There's also a 5-megapixel camera with all the usual features and a 4-inch multi-touch screen.
