With just days to go before the UK launch of the iPad 2 (at least, in theory), Sky has decided now is the perfect time to launch the Sky News for iPad.Not just a 'port' of some text pages to the tablet, according to TechRadar, it is an 'innovative and fresh application' focusing less on the written word and more on live video. This is the news, as it happens in 2011, after all.Interestingly, the app only works when the user is online, probably because of the need to feed all that video and just as interestingly, the app will become a paid-for application later in the year for non-Sky customers. Yes, tempting you in and making it hard to leave with a 'sticky' app. They're no fools.John Ryley, Head of Sky News, said: 'We pride ourselves on being an innovative, brave and mould-breaking news service, and work hard to give our audiences access to news on their terms. Having delivered content across digital, online and mobile, iPad was the next logical platform on which to break new ground. With more and more of our viewers embracing mobile devices to stay connected to the news, the launch of Sky News for iPad is one of the most important developments in Sky News' history.'On the downside, there's not a lot of sport and weather content, but according to Mr Ryley, these are covered by other apps. You do suspect a Sky Sports app cut from the same cloth to follow if this one is successful though.
