Budget Alcatel Android phones head to O2

Back in September of last year, we mentioned that Alcatel was offering a budget Android phone via the Carphone Warehouse, going by the name of the OT-980. it was under £100 - which perhaps indicates a price point for some new budget Alcatel Androids heading to the O2 network.

According to Pocket Lint, Alcatel will be offering handsets on the O2 network for the very first time, including the Alcatel One Touch 355 QWERTY and One Touch 708 touchscreen. Both are said to be Android 2.2 devices, with a 'thin overlay' to the vanilla Android experience in order to make the OS a little more accessible. After all, this is certain to be first-time Android user territory.

The One Touch 355 has a full QWERTY keyboard and access to Facebook and Twitter, along with a VGA camera. There's also a text chat function that enables you to scroll through the log of each of your conversations. The One Touch 708 is a touch screen handset with a full touch screen, 1.3 megapixel camera and expandable memory. Both, of course, will offer access to the Android Market, which is the big selling point here.

That operating system is a step-up, but the features aren't a million miles away from that Carphone Warehouse phone from last year. Hence the reason we think these will, once more, come in under the £100 mark. We'll have to wait and see though, with neither Alcatel or O2 offering either price details or indeed, a shelf date. Look out for both in the coming weeks if you want to try Android without breaking the bank.
