iOS 4.3 update going live tonight?

Yes, we know this is speculation, but there is significant enough speculation to suggest that the iOS 4.3 software update from Apple could land tonight, ahead of the date originally quoted by Apple. That's this coming Friday if you didn't know.

In truth, there was also speculation that it was landing last night, which it obviously didn't, leaving many people with a sore finger from hitting update buttons on Macs or PCs. But according to Crave, it might not have been too far from the truth. Veteran Apple-watcher Jim Dalrymple, from tech site The Loop, believes the update will be launched from Apple's servers tonight: 'The speculation of iOS coming early seems to be solid. It's just the day that's off. If I were sitting waiting for iOS 4.3 to hit, I'd be ready tomorrow.'

If you've got plans for tonight, don't put them off, because this is speculation. The 6pm Friday time slot is still the official word from Apple. But if you are at a loose end with an iPhone and iPad, you might want to check sometime this evening. You never know.

Why should you care? Because it happens to offer more features for no money, that's why. Heading up the list is a Personal Hotspot feature, which allows you to share an iPhone 4 mobile data connection with up to five devices in a combination of up to three Wi-Fi, three Bluetooth and one USB device. Every connection is password protected and when not in use Personal Hotspot turns itself off to save battery life. Here's hoping the networks play ball on this.

Safari mobile gets the same Nitro JavaScript engine that Apple uses on the desktop too, which is said to double the performance of JavaScript execution for speedier browsing. There's also a new iTunes Home Sharing service for playing music, films and TV programmes on an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch from an iTunes library on a Mac or PC over a local Wi-Fi network, while enhancements to AirPlay means additional content streaming, including video from third party apps and web sites, videos from the Photos app and previews from the iTunes app to your TV. You can also shoot a video on your iPad 2, iPhone or iPod touch and stream it directly from the Photos app to Apple TV.

iOs 5 is rumoured to be launching in early April. So not long to wait for even more features, along with all the speculation that comes with it.
