Sony Ericsson Xperia Play breaks cover again

The big Sony Ericsson phone launch at the recent CES was the Xperia arc. A tasty smartphone no doubt, but not the Xperia Play (aka the PlayStation Phone) we were all hoping for. We suspect that's being kept for the next big event, the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona over 14th - 17th February. Which gives sites plenty of time to drip out more detail - just what the Chinese site IT 168 is doing in fact.

According to Slashgear, the IT 168 site has had an 'extended play' with the smartphone, taking time to take some much-improved images too - the one you see on this page being perhaps the best image we've seen so far.

They have also managed to fill out and confirm the specification too, although as this is still likely to be a pre-production model, it could change. Good news is the presence of Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) for the operating system from day one, with the phone also pre-loaded with access to a PlayStation Pocket app store. After all, this is a gaming phone.

Under the bonnet, there's Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon QSD8255 processor and an Adreno 205 GPU, with 4-inch touchscreen running at 854 x 480, a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, 512MB of RAM/ROM, a microSD card slot and dual-microphones (to help with noise cancellation) finishing things off on the phone side. You'll also notice that gaming functionality/control that slides out too.

As we said, that Barcelona event in February is the likely launch for this, stay tuned for that.
