When it first landed, the Sony Reader device was really big news in the UK, taking up the slack from the lack of any Kindle launch over here. But it's a much tougher market these days when it comes to eBooks, so it makes sense for Sony to expand its interests into the app market.According to Pocket Lint, Sony has announced that it will be going cross-platform with its Sony Reader, initially by launching apps for both the iPhone and Android handsets. No iPad? We're surprised about that one too. We suspect it's coming, although nothing is confirmed as yet.Grab the app and you get access to the Sony Reader store, without the need to shell out for the standalone device. But if you do have a Sony Reader, you will be able to sync up with it from your smartphone, as well as your computer. There's also the option to bookmark, adjust font sizes, make notes and so on. Although there's always the limitation of the small smartphone screen, especially if your eyesight isn't what it was.Look out for the Kindle-rivalling apps in December.
