Android 2.1 roll out starts for Xperia phones

The saga of the Sony Ericsson Android update is like a soap opera for the digital age. Just when you think it's in touching distance, big bad Sony Ericsson snatches it away. Well Xperia owners, your pain should soon be over as the Android 2.1 rollout is finally underway.

According to TechRadar, the update is now available to Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, X10 Mini and Pro users in Scandinavian territories, the idea being to roll out gradually over different areas. Ok, it's not in the UK yet, but the fact that it's finished and ready to go is something to celebrate. We suspect it will be here in a matter of weeks, if not less. Later than promised, but not by much.

There is, however, an underlying issue with this. It's an update to Android 2.1, not the more recent 2.2 upgrade. But you will notice significant improvements, not least support for better versions of Google Maps, better keyboards and better social network integration. There's also improvements specific to each device, including HD video recording with continuous autofocus on the X10, plus five home screens for more widget and icon placement.

The X10 Mini and Mini Pro also get improved Bluetooth support, auto-synchronisation between Facebook and the phone book and better content back up. X8 you ask? That's getting an upgrade soon, although no one has a clue exactly when.

If we here a definite date for the UK upgrade, we'll let you know. Or just keep checking that handset.
