BlackBerry Bold 9780 officially launches

We got hands-on earlier in the week, ahead of the official launch of the new BlackBerry Bold 9780.

It's the latest BlackBerry Bold, but reminiscent of a classic - complete with optical trackpad and solid QWERTY keyboard, throwing in the new BlackBerry 6 operating system as a welcome bonus.

Other features are also plentiful, with both 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS for location-based applications and geo-tagging, a 5-megapixel camera with continuous auto focus, scene modes, image stabilisation, flash and video recording plus 512MB Flash memory and an expandable memory card slot that supports up to 32GB of additional storage.

As we mentioned, that new BlackBerry 6 operating system is a serious selling point, with a rich WebKit-based browser that renders HTML web pages far better than previous generations, as well as offering tabs for accessing multiple sites simultaneously and a zoom feature for easier viewing.

Messaging has also been improved, especially with management of social networking and RSS feeds, while BBM (BlackBerry Messenger), Facebook, Twitter and MySpace are all to hand, as is a dedicated YouTube app, universal search and access to the BlackBerry App World site.

RIM is promising this from the beginning of November, so look out for the network announcements very soon. Price likely to be from free on contract.
