Back in 2009, Virgin Media offered its first £8.50 tariff, a deal that offered minutes and texts, plus data too (for a small top-up fee). Oh yes, a decent handset was thrown in as well. February 2009 is a long time ago now, so Virgin has decided to spruce up its offering. The new contracts are 24-month deals, with the £8.50 offering you 100 minutes, 100 texts and free calls from home phones and Virgin mobiles, if you happen to already be a Virgin Media customer. For an added 30p a day, you get data access too.Not much different there, the change is all about the handsets. Five new handsets are on offer - the special edition Nokia 5230 Chrome, Nokia X2, Nokia 6700 Slide in Silver or Pink, Samsung Monte in Pink or Black and the Samsung Tocco. All have their own selling points. For example, the Nokia X2 has a 2GB memory card included and comes with a five megapixel camera and dedicated Facebook, and the Nokia 5230 Chrome has a large touchscreen, built-in GPS and Nokia’s Ovi Maps. The Nokia 6700 Slide is an app-friendly app handset with built-in 3G, the Samsung Monte is set-up with dedicated social networking widgets and the Samsung Tocco, with its 5-megapixel camera, has both autofocus and face detection to rival a compact camera.Jonathan Kini, director of mobile at Virgin Media: 'We’re delighted to be able to offer this fantastic new range of handsets for free on our incredibly popular £8.50 tariff. There’s something for all the family in this new range and existing Virgin Media customers can benefit from even greater value with a host of exclusive extras including free to calls to Virgin Mobiles from their home phones.'
