Alcatel OT-980 Android handset launches

The words 'Alcatel' and 'budget' go together like 'fish' and 'chips', so it's no surprise to see another budget smartphone from the company. But an Android phone for under £100 might just turn a few heads.

According to Cnet, said phone will retail for £99.95, a very reasonable price for a touchscreen slider that could pass for a Palm Pre on a dark night. Ok, it's not quite that when you get hands-on, but it's still a decent piece of kit.

The handset has a 2.8-inch resistive touchscreen, a slide-out Qwerty keypad, Android 2.1 for the operating system, Wi-Fi and HSPA data connectivity, MP3 player, 2-megapixel camera, a multi-messaging client and if you get lost, a compass. Like we said, decent.

And all of that for under £100 in a choice of cherry red or silver for the colours. The Carphone Warehouse will be stocking it, or check out the usual online retailers. If you've never quite been convinced about Android, it's an affordable toe in the water.
