First we were told of a three-week delay, later updated to the end of July. But the white iPhone 4 never did appear from Apple. Now we hear that the white smartphone might not appear this year.Orange is the network breaking silence on the issue, sending out an email to all customers previously expressing an interest in going white. It said: 'We wanted to let you know that there won’t be any white iPhone 4s in the UK until the end of the year. If you’re happy to wait another few months we’ll let you know as soon as they’re back in stock.'So you can effectively write off the rest of the year, with a big question mark over whether it will ever appear. Why the delay? No one is really sure. After all, you would have expected it just to be a matter of slapping on a new case. But that's not how it works.According to Apple, 'white models of Apple’s new iPhone 4 have proven more challenging to manufacture than expected', which is said to be down to the glass screen and paint thickness. At least, that's the rumour coming out of the Chinese factory producing them. Not an ideal situation, but if you've managed to resist the temptation of buying a black one so far, we suspect you'll be able to wait a little longer to secure a white one. Here's hoping that date doesn't get pushed back again.
