Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 hits O2

'Late 2010' was the approximated launch date of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8, but O2 has shunted that forward a little - offering the handset from September 2010.

Sadly, no price is given on O2's pre-order page, but I think it's safe to say that if you sign up for a reasonable monthly rate, this Android touchscreen will be heading your way for nothing. After all, this is very much a mid-range handset, emphasised by it running (just) Android 1.6 at launch. Unless SE and O2 use the next 4 weeks to hammer out an upgrade. We wouldn't recommend you holding your breath on that one.

It's not a million miles away from the X10 Mini. Indeed, Sony Ericsson describes the interface as 'similar to that of the Xperia X10 mini', so you might want to check out that in the meantime if you want an early test drive.

Other features include a 3-inch capacitive touchscreen, Sony Ericsson's Timescape functionality for accessing updates from social networks like Facebook and Twitter, a 3.2-megapixel camera with geotagging and Facebook uploading, a 600 MHz processor, 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, GPS, a microSD slot, 2GB card and five colour options for the cladding.

No word on this being an exclusive, so if you don't fancy O2, might be worth sitting it out for a few weeks.
