Virgin Media introduces the VM800 smartphone

Looking for a smartphone, but not keen on the big contract? The Virgin Media VM800 could be for you.

Produced exclusively for Virgin by Alcatel, the VM800 is offered in a bold pink with chrome finish, something that will appeal to some, but make it somewhat less appealing to others. If you happen to be one of the former, read on, because it does offer decent value when it comes to browsing and networking.

A full QWERTY handset (useful if messaging is your bag), the VM800 comes with six months of free mobile web access, the Opera Mini mobile browser and quick access to Facebook and Bebo. Ok, the camera is a rather forgettable 2-megapixel affair, but there is plenty of storage for those snaps, up to 4GB in total, along with a media player, FM radio, Bluetooth and some gaming. Not bad at all for a budget phone.

According to Virgin Media, you can pick up the VM800 for £39.99 when bought with £10 airtime, a deal which also throws in 300 free texts and deals on calls to other Virgin Mobile handsets. In terms of topping up, £20 per month of call credit also gets unlimited free texts and web access, £15 per month gets 600 free texts and £10 per month gets 300 free texts. The handset is available right now from your local Virgin dealer.
