The Event Module feature allows friends and family to follow you in real time if you are participating in a distance-related sports event such as a marathon or bike race. Your 'personal fans' can even send you pep talk messages during the event. A second new feature, launched this month, is Endomondo's integration with heart rate monitors, enabling heart rate data to be tracked whilst you are exercising. This feature, which works in conjunction with a Polar or Zephyr HxM heart rate monitor with Bluetooth, is currently only available with an Android mobile phone. Endomondo expects to roll it out to other platforms in the near future.
Mette Lykke, co-founder of Endomondo, explains, "Since launching Endomondo last year, we have continually evolved our offering. We are particularly excited about our Event Module feature - as far as we know, this is the world's first public and free live tracking tool specifically for sport events. Professional athletes are often live tracked when participating in a race and we wanted to make this feature available for recreational athletes, too".
"It's a great tool for sharing your event experience with others, in real time. With the pep talk feature, the spectator can type in a short message online which is then read out loud to the athlete a few seconds later. It has proven to be a great motivator - and it's all free".
Endomondo is ideal for tracking training details for any distance sports, from running and cycling to roller skating and kayaking. You simply turn on the free Endomondo mobile app at the start of your workout. At the end of your workout, just press stop on your phone and your track is automatically uploaded to your profile at Endomondo.com. The next time you log in, you will be able to see your latest workout, including a map, distance, pace, end time and split times. For users in need of extra motivation, Endomondo offers a free audio coach on the phone. A 'virtual coach' will then give you audio feedback on your performance for every mile covered.
Founded by three Danish management consultants who identified an opportunity to make sports training more fun, Endomondo officially launched in Denmark last year. There are already 215,000 Endomondo users and the company foresees strong growth going forward. Mette Lykke concludes, "The beauty of Endomondo is that it's so simple to use. As a free service, it appeals to a wide range of people, whether they want more accurate information about their own training programme or whether they enjoy a more competitive and social element to their training. With Endomondo you can challenge a friend or group of people to train and compare results. You can also find 'sports buddies' online and become part ofa wider training community. It's proved to be a great way of enjoying training and improving your sports performance."
Endomondo is available on virtually all GPS phones (including iPhone, Nokia, BlackBerry, HTC, Sony Ericsson and Samsung) or Garmin devices. For further information, visit www.endomondo.com
To make it even easier for you to use Endomondo whilst out and about, we have five Endomondo arm bands to give away. Each armband, worth £17, has a flexible strap to fit men and women and is the ideal way to carry a mobile phone whilst exercising. It has been designed to be used with all phones smaller than or equal to the size of an iPhone.
