Instant messaging on mobiles was tipped to be the next big app - and it looks like that's the case with Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger.
IM apps have been floating about app stores for ages, but the new app for iPhone is unique in that it has most of the same features you'd find on desktop Messenger, with file transfer, emoticons and the 'nudge' to buzz an unresponding buddy.
The app runs in the background, so you'll receive pop-up notifications whenever someone sends you an IM. You can also access your Hotmail account without leaving the app,
and receive email notifications within the app of new messages. As well, you'll be able to view friends' status updates from Facebook, Flickr, MySpace and other social networks.
Photos can be uploaded direct from phone to the Windows Live portal, where you can create albums, add captions and allow people to comment.
Windows Live Messenger is available now from the App Store for iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.
