Acer beTouch E130 smartphone breaks cover

RIM might be moving away from the classic BlackBerry profile with devices like the Storm and the Pearl, but that shape is proving popular with other makers. Earlier today Nokia announced the C3 handset and now Acer has its own variation - the Acer beTouch E130.

It's an Android phone and a very unusual one. How many Android phones can you think of with a front-facing 'hard' keyboard? We can think of one right now, but feel free to add a comment if you can think of more. It's also slim and with more than a touch of style. What more can you ask?

Well, when we look at the detail, a little bit more. According to Engadget , despite being a new phone, it only offers Android 1.6 for the OS, which is some way behind the times in light of Android 2.2's official launch. It might not be as fast as some either with a 416MHz ST-Ericsson processor, 256MB of RAM and 512MB of ROM keeping things ticking over. Not sure about 2.6-inch QVGA touchscreen display in 2010 either. There's also a 3.2-megapixel camera, microSD slot and 3G/Wi-Fi connectivity.

So a mixed bag, but if you like a front-facing keyboard, which is always useful for messaging, and like Android it could be worth considering. Especially as the price point is likely to be some way off the top end. No news of a UK launch, we'll keep you posted as things progress.
