While most students are drinking pints of snakebite and waking up to catch the last ten minutes of This Morning, an 18-year-old at Southampton University has won the UK Vodafone AppStar competition. Mark Salvin who is in his first year of a computer science degree has won the €25,000 prize with his JoggerTracker application. Using your phones GPS, the app calculates the number of calories you burn and the distance travelled on your runs, before displaying the information on a progress graph. By measuring your current graph against previous ones, you can measure how much you are improving or if you need to dig deeper to reach your goals. The Vodafone judges were particularly impressed with the user experience of the app and Mr Salvin now goes through to a head-to-head against the winners from seven other countries in a bid to claim the €100,000 total prize.
All entries can be viewed at from 29 April to 21 May, with voters automatically being entered into another prize draw for the chance to win one of ten Samsung H1 phones. The winner of the European Vodafone AppStar will be announced on 24 May.
