Maybe it’s something to do with the conjunction of the stars. Whatever, HTC seems to be at the centre of events, all of a sudden. The latest on the rumour mill is that HTC is looking to develop its own operating system. Seems like it’s been watching Samsung's bada with a keen interest and a smile has spread across the face of CFO, Cheng Hui-ming, “We continue to assess, but that requires a few conditions to justify,” he said a little mysteriously.
“If you look at the successful smartphone players, like Apple and Research in Motion, a reason for their success is that they have their own platform,” said Steven Tseng at RBS Asia Ltd. in Taipei to the Bloomberg website. “The negative is the amount of resources they’d need to allocate.”
And then there’s the rumours that HTC is in the running to buy out Palm. HTC has been doing well, hooked up to Google (Desire) and Microsoft (Touch Pro2) but, with its own OS and some juicy patents from a Palm acquisition, HTC could enter 2011 as a major player.
