Apple has finally officially announced its new OS, destined for the iPhone, version 4.0. It is targeted for a summer release.
The principle feature, which has already been discussed here, is the confirmation that multitasking will be included in version 4.0 - but only for 3GS, your basic 3G phone will not be included. This will mean that 3GS owners will be able to use VoiP, location-based services, social networking and more all at the same time.
Other new features you can expect from OS 4.0 will include folders that will hold other icons on the homescreen, improved email including a 'unified’ inbox and threaded messaging plus multiple Exchange accounts. A section called Game Center that resembles Xbox Live will be featured, new enterprise facilities, iAd - a new mobile advertising feature plus iBooks -which has already been released via iPad but which will now also be included on the iPhone.
Also, according to the Engadget website, look out for tap to focus for video, Bluetooth keyboard support, digital zooming up to 5 times, a spell checker, homescreen wallpaper changes, geotagging and gift apps.
Expect iPad to receive OS 4.0 later – probably Autumn time.
