Can you 'ear me mother? No longer will we all have to repeat 1930s comedian, Sandy Powell's catchphrase when strolling merrily down the high street shouting at the top of our voice to be heard in a satisfactory manner, or for the youngsters out there wot don't have culture, to do a Dom Jolly in a restaurant. Oh no. For Orange (which has recently launched its App Shop and photo sharing on Twitter) has announced HD Voice – a high quality voice service that utilises the WB-AMR (Wideband Adaptive Multi-Rate) speech codec that has a wide speech bandwidth (50-7000 Hz), capable of providing enhanced sound quality without using extra network resources.
Tom Alexander was pretty pleased about the whole thing. Orange's cheerful CEO (witness the man trying to suppress a grin, below) declared that: 'HD Voice really does inject a level of innovation into mobile phone calls, making it sound as if callers are actually in the same room. Once people have tried it, they won't want to go back.'
Expect to see HD Voice capable handsets soon, along with the new service later in the year.
