O2 launches eco-phone

Sony Ericsson is going green with the launch of its Naite handset, first of the GreenHeart eco phone range, and O2 is right there as the first operator to bring it to market.

The Naite is simple, nice-enough looking handset with some serious green credentials, including reduced Co2 emissions by 15% (compared to similar product, the Sony Ericsson C902), reduced paper usage by 90%, a low power charger, and two eco-friendly apps, the Carbon Calculator and EcoMate that ranks the green-ness of various activities.

We rate it anyway - it's shortlisted in our very first Mobile choice Green Award at this year's Consumer Awards - and its spec list is decent too. Two-meg camera, Bluetooth, FM radio and a microSD slot to beef up internal memory to 8GB.

Buy the Naite on O2 and you'll get a gift, such as a solar powered charger, family Eco days out and organic food hampers. You can also choose to donate to charity instead (you big softy, you) - with this option, you can pay the salary of a teacher for a month, help the care of a vulnerable child or contribute towards a roundabout water system in Africa.

Available now on O2, at stores and online. Free on selected pay monthly tariffs and £97.86 on PAYG.
