Mobile carriers have been asked to block the mobile phone numbers of prostitutes who advertise their wares in phone boxes throughout the London area during the run-up to the Olympic Games in 2012.
Carriers such as O2, Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, 3 and Virgin Mobile are all expected to comply with the request from the Mayor.
"The Mayor wants to see an agreement reached between mobile phone operators and the police that would see these numbers taken out of use as soon as they are identified, cutting off their key source of income." said Kit Malthouse, Deputy Mayor for Policing to the Times Online website.
The move has been initiated alongside ongoing investigations into the illegal trafficking of women who are often conned into entering into the UK and then subjugated by criminal gangs into becoming prostitutes.
"So alongside the Metropolitan Police busting brothels and taking out the criminal networks that feed them, we want to cut their access to cash and punters starting by ridding London of prostitute cards in telephone boxes."
