With 71% of customers deeming it vital that they carry their phone number over when switching mobile operators, Ofcom is looking into making the whole process both faster and easier to do. Transferring your mobile number (a process known as 'porting') can currently take up to two working days, but Ofcom hopes to reduce this further to at least one working day and possibly even within two hours.
Ofcom are also aiming to reduce the hassle involved in getting hold of your Porting Authorisation Code (PAC) needed in order to complete a porting process. Currently customers need to approach their original operator, get the PAC code from them and then pass it on to the new provider. Ofcom hopes to implement rules which would mean the customer could avoid this process and simply go direct to their new operator.
