Recently revealed at the Wireless Japan 2009 show, which took place from July 22th to 24th at Tokyo Big Sight, is a microSD card with built in wireless LAN functions.
Developed by the KDDI Corporation, the new microSD card looks and works like a standard memory card that you might find in the new HTC Hero or the forthcoming LG Chocolate. However, this particular model includes a Wi-Fi facility built in which takes up around a third of the area of the chassis. Measuring 11 x 16 x 0.7mm, when equipped in a mobile phone, it enables a faster Internet connection, said the Technon Nikkeibp website.
KDDI showcased two types of the card, which are manufactured by Mitsumi Electric Co Ltd and Renesas Technology Corp, respectively. Both featured a wireless LAN IC compliant with IEEE802.11b/g, a transceiving antenna, passive components and so on.
No release date for the new technology has been announced.
