Palm has announced that the WebOS SDK for the Palm Pre is due for release at the end of Summer while the latest version of the WebOS, v.1.0.3, has been released for general download. The update adds enhanced Google calendar syncing, improved email capabilities and updates to several applications.
The Palm Pre is currently for sale in the USA, on a limited basis, while the UK still awaits a general release. This fact may be a blessing in disguise, however, as the Software Development Kit for the operating system has still to be released for independent developers.
"We've been working very hard on the SDK," said the Palm developers, "and are eager to open access on a wider scale, but the software and the developer services to support it just aren't ready yet."
Once the WebOS SKD has been released, those same developers will be able to create applications for the Palm Pre. The question has to be asked, however, what took so long?
