It might not be official just yet and release dates have yet to be received but, according to the BGR website, the BlackBerry's Messenger utility is to receive a significant update, which will sit well with new and upgraded social utilities such as HP's Friendlee and Twitterberry.
Proposed upgrades include Avatar support that will allow you to place a camera picture on the phonem, which will be displayed next to your Messenger name. The utility will also include GPS location. This will mean that, subject to your own permission, your friends will be able to track your location either automatically or on request.
Another new feature will be a proximity sensor which, say observers, will provide you with information on the relative position of yourself in relation to a friend or colleague. The 'set conversation subjects' option will help you organise and keep track of your conversations. Finally, the home screen support means you can pin a contact directly onto the home screen for easy access.
