New Android 1.5 has added widget functionality

Widgets - a cute name that belies their dead usefulness. Now Google's open-source operating system Android is getting full widget support in the software developer's kit for its latest iteration, 1.5.

According to Android Authority, developers will be able to create real-time widgets to provide live data on the homescreen, and also link to the full application if desired.

Widgets could include new mail notifications, weather updates or even the instant-messenger status of a friend, and would update on a schedule set up by the developer, or by Android's new auto-update function.
