It's official! The HTC Magic, Vodafone's first-ever Android handset will be available for free on a two year £35 a month contract. Customers will be able to enjoy 700 free minutes and 250 texts per month as well as unlimited mobile internet use (of course with that little disclaimer of a fair usage policy, this time up to 500MB per month), while the operator will throw in a 2GB memory card which helps make amends for the disappointing 500MB of internal memory. However, while the handset isn't expected in shops until 4 May, pre-order it now and Vodafone will reduce the cost to £30 a month for the entire two year contract, giving you a total saving of £120.
The HTC Magic comes in white and apart from six hard buttons including a call/hang up key, menu button and home button, is operated entirely via a 3.2-inch QVGA touch-screen display. Other features include the ability to record and upload video direct to YouTube (something you can't do with the T-Mobile G1), HSDPA/HSUPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS and a 3.2-megapixel camera. As the second device to operate on the Android market, users will be able to download relevant applications, ringtones and games from the open source platform. However, one of the features that has got us most excited is the ability to use the much talked about Street View on Google Maps, demonstrated here in our exclusive video demo.
