Asus unveils Skype videophone

Skype users will soon be able to make VoIP video calls without the need of a computer thanks to the Asus Eee Videophone. Sporting a large 7-inch LCD display, there's no wires required as the phone operates via Wi-Fi though you can use a wired LAN connection if you prefer making it fairly portable (although it won't fit in your pocket). It is also powered by a rechargeable battery, though with a talktime of only 20 minutes and a standby time of 30 minutes, you won't want to wander too far away from a charger. The integrated webcam is built with a high quality video sensor that Asus promises will provide an excellent visual experience even when in low light conditions.

Asus has also boxed in a standard mini-jack headset and microphone so as soon as you've picked up the Eee Videophone you're all set to natter away to friends and family. Users can also use the device to make and receive calls to and from fixed and mobile lines.

Customers can pre-order the Asus Eee Videophone from or the Skype shop, with an RRP of £219.95.
