In a move that is sure to irk the folks at O2, Play.com is offering unlocked iPhones from the end of the month. According to the site, both 8GB and 16GB versions of the much lauded handset will be available for delivery from 27 March with pre-orders available now. At what cost we hear you ask? Well for the 8GB version the SIM-free phone will cost a cool £549.99 while the 16GB version is even steeper at £649.99. With Carphone Warehouse offering the 8GB version on O2's Pay As You Go scheme at £352.50 and the 16GB version at £391.44 it will be interesting to see how popular Play.com's offer proves to be.
Officially the Apple iPhone is locked to the O2 network in the UK, meaning it can be only used with an O2 SIM card. However, by unlocking the device users will be able to use SIM cards from other operators, though there have been claims that by doing so can lead to software failure.
