Truphone turns your iPod Touch into an iPhone

Can't stomach the thought of shelling out for an iPhone and 18-month contract? Apps from Apple's iTunes store can allow you to make phone calls from the equally sleek ‘n sexy iPod Touch.

The applications, which include Truphone and Fring, access Wi-Fi hotspots and allow you to make free or cheap phone calls over the internet.

Rates on Truphone vary, but you can check inside the app before you call.

You can also make free calls to Google Talk contacts on Truphone and Fring, as well as write instant message to contacts on IM services including Gmail chat, AIM and MSN Messenger.

These apps work only on the second-generation of the Touch. Of course, if you wait till May, O2 is dropping the tariffs on its iPhone 3G to clear shelf space for summer's iPhone nano.
