Samsung to launch its own App store

Samsung has announced the forthcoming launch of a new App website for its own mobile phones. The company has declared that the site will initially be populated by 1100 apps and will be officially opened at the Barcelona Mobile World Congress on the 16th February.

To begin with, the store will support all S60 mobile phones along with Windows Mobile platforms. However, other mobiles will be included as the year progresses.

"For Samsung Mobile Innovator members this represents a fantastic opportunity for them to get their applications to a large Samsung-user audience very quickly" explained Phil Northam, Global Marketing Manager at Samsung Mobile Innovator.

The new App store will, says Samsung, initially be focused on the UK market and will be able to hold both commercial and freeware content.

According to the company, there will be no up-front - or indeed ongoing - costs involved for anyone wanting to post new Apps onto the site. Freeware will also be distributed without the developer incuring costs.
