Toshiba are entering the smartphone market in a big way with the TG01, a super-skinny, full touch-screen internet phone that is also optimised for gaming, movies and music.
Mobile Choice was at the Toshiba Mobile Revolution press conference today, which talked us through what sounds a mad, bad iPhone killer – it's skinnier, it's got a far bigger screen at 4.1" diameter, and features a Qualcomm 1Ghz processor that is powerful enough for graphics-rich mobile games like the Prince of Persia.
The phone runs on Windows Mobile 6.1, with Toshiba's own 3D GUI, GPS, Wi-Fi, HSDPA and a touchpad.
We observed all sorts of swiping and tapping action to navigate what seemed like a very user-friendly interface, which was highly customisable as well. We liked the 'shake technology' where you can shake the phone to pick up a call, and shake it again to hang up. It looked as satisfying as snapping your clamshell shut on a conversation.
Toshiba also demoed a racing game where the car was controlled via tappnig and tilting action, as well as a couple minutes of video which came out crystal-clear.
The phone will be officially announced at Mobile World Congress in a couple weeks, and is due for a summer 2009 release in Europe.
Our video demo will be up later this afternoon. In the meantime, check out pix of us holding the uber-slim device, which looks like it may actually snap in our slightly chunky fingers.
