Dell to enter smartphone market? Really for real, this time?

Like an ancient but tenacious relative, those rumours of Dell releasing its own smartphone just won't die. This time it's the Wall Street Journal kicking some life into the old beast, with ‘news' that Dell is preparing a move into mobile phones as early as next month, according to ‘people familiar with the matter'.

Apparently the company has had engineers working on prototypes running Android and Windows Mobile, with one handset having a slide-out QWERTY (we're loving those right now) and another a simpler candybar form.

With everyone, including Prada, releasing a smartphone these days, we'd be more surprised if Dell, which has a record for solid if somewhat uninspiring PCs, isn't planning some kind of lateral shift into the increasingly mainstream smartphone market.
