Sony Ericsson - supporter of the indie massive? The mobile phone giant has just signed a deal with Universal music to promote emerging artists on its online streaming service, PlayNow Uncut, as well as its handsets and download service PlayNow Plus.
PlayNow Uncut is a designated promo space for unsigned and emerging artists, and has actually been around since October 2006 when it was known as M-Buzz. Now its musical lineup will include Universal up-and-coming talent like Bristol popster Gavin Thorpe (that's right, who? Exactly.)
Music from these artists will also be preloaded onto Sony Ericsson handsets and used on Sony's Fanwalk site, a corollary site to the MTV European Music Awards.
Sony E will have access to master recordings, while the musicians will not receive the usual license payments, which we suppose is the price for free publicity?
