Skype launches Android application

VoIP specialists Skype has released a ‘lite' version compatible with a range of mobile phones. Consumers will be able to download the version to Android-powered devices, as well as more than 100 Java-enabled handsets, from the likes of Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. Currently the only Android-powered device is the T-Mobile G1.

Once downloaded, users will be able to make Skype-to-Skype calls over the internet around the world for just the cost of your data usage. In addition, instant messages can be sent and received to and from individuals or groups, be alerted to which of your Skype contacts are online and available to chat, as well as enjoy low rate Skype calls to landline and mobile phone numbers.

Customers can download Skype lite from their phone by visiting www.skype.com/m or from a PC at www.skype.com/go/mobiledownload.
