Yanko Design has created the Silicon Touch, a new case for the Apple iPhone mobile phone designed to be used by the blind.
The Silicon Touch iPhone case works with an application to allow special accessibility functions like text to speech and moon-type tactile feedback.
In effect, the device covers the handset and allows the blind to access the iPhone's facilities via bas-relief buttons imprinted upon the case,
Why the blind might want to use a touchscreen phone in the first place, in which they have to fight the interface, is rather questionable. I would assume that a more tactile or specialist text-to-speech phone might give more of a start in getting to grips with a technology in which the most popular variants have left little sympathetic design variation for any sort of disabled user.
