Nokia Maps gets an upgrade

Nokia is to make a number of tweaks and updates to their already excellent navigation solution, Nokia Maps. As well as 3D landmarks for 216 cities, high-resolution aerial images and terrain maps, users will be privy to instant real time information such as camera alerts and traffic information. In addition, Wcities event guides will provide the latest information for events and movies in over 450 destinations. Pedestrians will benefit from straight-line guidance that provides the shortest distance between various points, while you will be alerted to when you need to take a corner or turn by a beep or vibration.

Nokia Maps is also set to become an integral part of Ovi, Nokia's collective internet services. Maps on Ovi will soon enable users to pre-plan trips on their PC before synchronizing with their mobile. Ovi users will be able to share routes with other users, alerting each other to points of interest so as they can post-edit particular routes for the next time they make that journey.

Although some of these features are yet to be fully integrated, a beta version of the new Nokia Maps is available on selected devices from the Nokia Beta Labs website, http://www.nokia.com/betalabs, while the online PC version can be accessed from http://maps.ovi.com.
