Reports are filtering down through the Microsoft rumour mill that the company is finally going to release a phone based on its Zune media player. Sources say that the ongoing success of the Apple iPhone and now the forthcoming release of the Google Android phone via T-Mobile has lead Microsoft to decide to make positive action rather than just being happy to supply its Mobile operating system to the smartphone competition.
According to the Pocket-Lint website the rumours have been triggered by none other than the current Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer who was heard saying to the CIO magazine that "Microsoft is ultimately planning on migrating its Zune software to other platforms".
Windows Mobile 7, which is due in the second half of 2009 may, say sources, include the Zune software. As a spin-off, this could also mean that smartphone such as those from HTC, Sony Ericsson and LG, featuring Zune software for their multimedia operations.
