Social networking websites such as Facebook, Bebo and MySpace have been accessed by 5 million people during the first quarter of 2008, according to a survey by the research outfit, Nielsen. Even more, 21 million people who use a mobile phone are actually members of a social networking site.
The most popular site is Facebook which has been accessed by over half a million people. Next, MySpace was access by around half that figure, then Bebo with other areas such as Windows Live Spaces and Flixter following. Other netwokring sites included Friends Reunited, Where Are You Now?, Yahoo Groups, Faceparty and Communities run by the BBC.
Interviewed by Guardian Online, Kent Ferguson, the client services manager at Nielsen Mobile said that, "Social networking is already a global phenomenon and mobile could be the next big thing in the space. There could be increased demand for mobile social networking driven by the flat fee price plans offered by the leading operators that give subscribers unlimited mobile internet access."
